The White Elephant is a 42 ft trimaran - short on comforts, long on speed. It is a fantastic boat to sail with enormous trampolines and no tiresome heeling over.

Good points

• Ridiculously cheap
• Lots of room to sit comfortably on the trampolines
• Fast for a 1980s trimaran with an easy motion making France and the Channel Islands accessible from Swanage
• Fantastic rig. Fully battened mylar main - new jib - enormous spinnaker.
• Draws 18 inches with centre board up so can sit on sand or mud and can get up little creeks.
• Mooring in Swanage Bay.
• Extras include outboard, inflatable, auto helm, GPS, VHF, solar panels etc
• Lots of sealed sections and so unsinkable like the Titanic.

Bad points

• Very little room indoors. May just be able to arrange for three to sleep on passage and for a small stove. The beams go straight through the hull which is good for strength but you are on your elbows to get through yourself.
• 32ft wide so you can’t go into pricey marinas with lock gates and in fact a bit of a handful anywhere without much room until you get used to it.
• Was amateur built for the three peaks race, so is not beautifully finished and a bit shabby now. However after pulling her out at Easter we hope she will be much improved
• Electrics are a bit old

An unexpected combination of events led to Nick being sold the White Elephant at a bargain price in November 2006. Seb and Greg, who also live in Swanage, joined in straight away. We have spent (one way and another) approximately £3000. Last summer we were thwarted by all sorts of unlikely events and used White Elephant much less than we had hoped. Although we intend to use her much more this year we know we won’t use her nearly enough and would like to share her with three more people.

This is a ’get stuck in’ arrangement where a positive attitude is more important than money or skills.

We are middle-aged, white, married, male, middle-skilled yachters who want to share our luck at having such a fantastic boat and who would welcome anyone who is keen.
