May Sailing News

1. RYA PUSH THE BOAT OUT, Saturday 25th May 2pm – 5pm

Volunteers needed

We would be very grateful if members could please consider volunteering to help, both ashore and afloat, to make this national event a success at SSC. Read more about the event.

Swanage Sailing Club is expecting up to 50 local newcomers to sailing over the afternoon. The plan is to show them our club and facilities, and for as many as would like to have rides in either in a sailing boat or a RIB, or kayaks if we have enough helpers, to get an introduction to the sport of sailing and healthy fun on the water.

Thank you for considering volunteering for what promises to be a great afternoon!

2. Tuesday Night Training – RACE TRAINING / BUDDY RACES

Tuesday night adult training has proved very popular this year – and more than 20 trainees from Tuesday night joined in the first Thursday Buddy Race, where they were supported round the course by those who race more frequently. It was lots of fun and the a good opportunity to test out our sailing skills and seamanship.

There is another Buddy Race on Thursday 27th June (7pm start). All Tuesday night trainees (new members, beginners and last year’s level 2 sailors) will have the opportunity to join the usual start racing programme as part of the Tuesday evening RYA training. This will give everyone the chance to learn the basic theory and practical experience of racing.

In addition, Doug Horner has kindly agreed to run a 7 week Race Training Course every Tuesday night in June and 3 Tuesdays in July (4th, 11th, 18th, 25th June and 9th, 16th 23rd July). This will be for a smaller group of just 6 boats to enable Doug is able to give personal attention to all participants so that they feel very comfortable and are competitive in a club race.

If you would like to be part of this group, please add your name to the post on Facebook or contact Hatty Fawcett (hatty.fawcett@googlemail.com). Places will be allocated based on ability to commit to the majority (if not all!) sessions and then a first come, first served basis.

3. Safety Duties

Please can everyone on safety teams remember to tick Dutyman and notify race officer if there is a problem doing duty.

Please don’t unsubscribe from Dutyman emails, you won’t get duty reminders.
