Some recent incidents while racing have resulted in damaged boats and crews with varying levels of distress, anger and incomprehension. The point is that these incidents are inclined to dissuade members from racing.
While aggressive use of the rules is normal under serious competitive sailing when all crews (should) have a good understanding of the rules, it is not the same for those who have less experience of racing , when they may be baffled as to what is going on. It is suggested that at SSC we should all be attempting to make people aware of rules, but in a relatively benign environment.
Rule 14 AVOIDING CONTACT – A boat shall avoid contact with another boat if reasonably possible. However a right of way boat or one entitled to mark room :
So you can be disqualified under this rule even if you have right of way, and particularly if injury or damage occurs. #
AERO sailors – see National Champion Sam’s excellent Tricks and Tips on how to get the best out of your Aero.
This Saturday sees another Fun Race taking place, suitable for those who do not race in the main series or Cup races. Come and have a go.
Thanks to SSC Members generosity (27 bottles + £60) and Hall & Woodhouse’s fantastic beer sponsorship we cracked over the £1,000 barrier for the first time.
FUN RACE FOR ALL start 1100 Sat 9th Sept – Adult and junior Trainees, social sailors who would like to try a race maybe try racing a different type of boat. Mike Cemm & Phil Palmer running safety team so lots of help for all beginners.
Hi Saturday safety team. I have changed the start time to 1100 Saturday morning. So safety team need to be at the club at 9.45 please. I have changed the time as the club access will be closed in the afternoon around 3pm for an hour or so due to the folk festival parade. If this change is a problem or if you have swapped. Please let me know.
Many thanks Mike
