Swanage Bay kelp and Shellfish

Published 17:18 on 29 Feb 2024

Ocean Origin Ltd have applied for a licence to locate a trial aquaculture site in Swanage Bay and are holding a meeting at 11am on Saturday 9th March at Emmanuel Baptist Church for consultation purposes. You may be interested to go along.

The proposal is that native kelp and shellfish species will be grown from suspended long-lines. The site will be 50m by 25m (surface measurements), after that it will expand to 100m by 200m. The proposed centre-point of the site will be 50.6092868, -1.9108234.

The site will be clearly marked as per Trinity House navigation regulations and marked on marine charts. The seaweed itself will be 3m below the surface as a minimum, and growing season is November to April, so in the summer period there should be no grow-lines or seaweed in the water - only buoys on each corner of the site.
